Re: What blockchain are you using?

Menno van Ginkel

Heya Rafael,

Good to hear from you. Hope you are doing well!

Nice list of blockchain development platforms!
I'd like to add Dragonchain to this list as well.

Tx Speed: Transactions are immediately usable on chain, and the first decentralization is seen within 20 seconds on Dragon Net. Security increases further to public networks ETH, BTC, and ETC within 10 minutes to 2 hours.
Tx Cost: lowest fee tier = $0.0000025/txn
Tx Volume: Basically infinitely scalable; 24h live demo proved 250m transactions, with a peak of 15k TPS on production
Consensus: Hybrid private/public infrastructure via Dragon Net. Every node has its own blockchain and is independently scalable. Dragonchain established Context Based Verification as its consensus model. Every transaction is immediately usable on a trust basis, and in time is provable to an increasing level of decentralized consensus.
Tokenization: Yes. 1 DRGN token generates 1 TIME per day. TIME is used as a scarce resource on the platform.
Coding language: Code containerized via Docker, so any programming language can be used for smart contracts
Identity solution: Factor, recently spun-off into an independent entity called MyFii.
Traceability solutions: Yes. Knowledge Perk is an example customer.
Data storage solutions: Currently only on your own business node. Future plans to integrate with decentralized storage solutions like Sia or Filecoin.
Grants available?:  Yes, through the Fellowship of the Order of Dragons.

Learn more about the capabilities of Dragonchain in this proposal to enable Reddit user interactions on-chain.

Kind regards,

Menno

Hi Luis,

Thanks for your reply! It is indeed difficult to find exact numbers on these statistics but this is how I did it.

- Tx cost: this depends mostly on the size of the transaction and congestion of the network. For Ethereum I took an average I found online. I know that Ethereum Tx cost can vary anywhere between 5 and 60 cent to even 2 dollars when the network gets congested. For vechain and Cardano I took a calculation example I found online from other Usecases with average transaction sizes.
- For the Tx speed I used the average time to full confirmation.
- For the volume we used the highest tested amount of TPS ever confirmed.

Best,
Rafael da Costa Guimaraes

Hi all,

Could you please tell us more details about column A so we can give you the accurate info for the network we are using (Telos)? Not everyone interprets TX speed or cost the same way. Specially the TX cost, as different protocols estimate it in different ways, as for some there is gas concept, others do not have it, etc.

Tx Speed
Tx Cost
Tx Volume
Consensus
Tokenization
Coding language
Identity solution
Traceability solutions
Data storage solutions
Grants available?

  • The potential of Decentralised Finance
This video explains the enormous potential of the decentralised finance (DeFi) movement for the 1.7B people without access to financial services. With access to smartphones, 1.1B people could build up a digital identity, get access to financial services so they can eventually participate and even compete in a global economy. The video then goes on to hype a cryptocurrency called Cardano which is building digital identity solutions for the unbanked (if you don't like cryptocurrency hype you can skip the last part of the video).

When we started off creating content for this community, we created a blog post called the 9 ways in which blockchain and digitalisation can help smallholder farmers which outline the potential blockchain and DeFi for farmers. By now, we tackled 6 out of these 9 ways with different blog posts which are all linked in the original post. Some articles are guest blogs created with other partners in this community (Agri-wallet, Topl, The New Fork, ScanTrust and IBISA). The content in this series provides very informational and in depth knowledge on the different ways in which farmers can be empowered by blockchain.

Public vs private blockchains is always an interesting one. I personally prefer public blockchains as I believe the agrifood sector is in need of more radical transparency, which public blockchains can provide. However, I do also understand that not every company wants to become fully transparent, or is even able to become fully transparent (yet). Therefore it is a logical thought for food brands to think they need to at least start off with a private blockchain, or to never use a public blockchain to begin with. But what many don't know is that using a public blockchain doesn't necessarily means that all your data will be on the streets. One can choose which information to publish on a blockchain and which not, or make use of the many encryption algorithms available, such as zero knowledge proofs, that also allow us to proof things publicly, without making the actual data public. But, are these solutions private and secure enough? Or the other way around, are private blockchains transparent enough? Some argue that use of private blockchains defeats the purpose of using blockchains to begin with as the data is now still in the hands of a view players. Which blockchain serves better for agrifood value chain purposes? I am really curious to hear your opinions on this one.

Last week, Fairfood officially launched its blockchain enabled food traceability platform, Trace. If you missed the (online) launch event on the 14th of May, don't worry! We have a replay link available so everybody can still see how the platform looks like and works for Trabocca. I think its a great practical example of how such a solution would look like in practice. Watch the replay here:

Feedback on the Digitalisation of African Agriculture report

Rafael da Costa Guimaraes

Dear members,

In December 2020, the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA) will cease its operations. We had helped to establish this list and fund the community materials so hope you can help with the request below.

As part of the closure process, we would like to invite you to participate in a short survey that assesses the outcomes of "The Digitalisation of African Agriculture Report 2018-2019" that CTA and Dalberg Advisors published in June 2019. The report, the first of its kind, analysed the current state of digitalisation of agriculture in Africa. The report can be found in the "files" section on the B4AG community page

Specifically, the survey will help us assess a) the achievement of the objectives of the report; b) how the report has been or is being used; c) the extent to which the recommendations of the report have been or are being implemented; d) the interest of stakeholders in building upon this work post-CTA; and thereby generate targeted recommendations for any future actions by stakeholders wishing to build on CTA’s legacy. Your feedback will enable us to finalise the project completion report.
Dea

The survey will take you approximately 15 minutes to complete.

We will greatly appreciate your time and effort in completing this survey on/or before 20th May 2020.

We look forward to your participation.
